Horseback Riding at Kalula Ranch
We went to the North Side of the island to Kalula Ranch to go horseback riding. The ranch we took our 2 hour ride on has been used as a backdrop for a number of movies like: You Me and Dupree, Mighty Joe Young, Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, 50 First Dates and Godzilla. They also shoot the TV series Lost on the ranch. In fact, the day we were riding, they were filming another episode just down the road. We had a really great time. We LOVED the horses, however I am now well aware of why cowboys walk the way they do! My backside is still sore! My horse was named Samurai, Natasha's horse was named Blaze, Jordan's horse was named Thunder and Eric's horse was named Hercules. Jordan's horse did not get along with the other horses (especially mine) and was a bit aggressive with the other horses. We were supposed to specifically keep Jordan's horse away from mine, but for awhile he was directly behind me.......thankfully without incident. We saw some gorgeous country side and some really fun movie sites.
I had to pass Tasha up.......she was going too slow:)
How pretty it was out there!
As you can see, we didn't stay in line like we were supposed to.....oops!
The girl in the blue shirt is Mahani, one of our guides. She told us all about the movie sets and the country side.
See the 2 palm trees just left of the center of the picture? They were planted there (fully grown) for the movie windtalkers. Palm trees typically only grow a mile or two from shore.
The shack right behind Jordan was converted into an outdoor bar for some sci-fi show that was filmed here.
The black mass at the base of the mountain is a covered pit where orchids grow. Look! We are all single file again. They were a bit obsessed with that.
